Professor Harindra Joseph Fernando Appointed to the Board of Editors of the

Professor Harindra Joseph Fernando, Wayne and Diana Murdy Family Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences, has been appointed to serve as a member of the board of editors of the scholarly journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical & Engineering Sciences.

The Royal Society, founded in 1660, created the journal in 1854 and began publishing in its current format in 1905 to disseminate original research and review papers associated with chemical, computational, Earth, engineering, mathematical, and physical sciences that present original and innovative ideas.

Fernando has been appointed in recognition of his scholarly contributions to the field of fluid dynamics. Specifically, he specializes in environmental fluid dynamics, as applied to atmospheric, oceanic, engineering and urban flows.

"It is a world-class journal, scientifically," says Fernando. "So an opportunity for expanding fluid mechanics in this multidisciplinary journal is a good opportunity," says Fernando.

As a member of the board, Fernando will make an initial evaluation of submitted papers, suggest referees, and make recommendations for publication. He will also advise the Editor and Publishing Editor on current trends and innovative research within the field of fluid mechanics where the journal ought to expand.

"A part of my job is to encourage people to submit their best work in the area of fluid mechanics," says Fernando.

In addition to his newly appointed role on the board of editors of The Royal Society, Fernando is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Fluid Mechanics. Fernando will begin his work with the board of editors in January 2018 and will serve for three years.
