Bio: Romit Maulik is an Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University (in 2019) and was the Margaret Butler Postdoctoral Fellow (from 2019-2021) before becoming an Assistant Computational Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory (from 2021-2023). From 2023-2025, he was an Assistant Professor in Informatics and Intelligent Systems at Penn State University. His group studies high-performance multifidelity scientific machine learning algorithm development with applications to various multiphysical nonlinear dynamical systems such as those that arise in mechanical and aerospace engineering, Earth systems modeling, nuclear fusion, and beyond. He is an Early Career Awardee of the Army Research Office and a Perry Academic Excellence Scholar at Purdue University.

Ankur Desai, chair of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will join the Notre Dame community to discuss the outsized impact land has on local and global climate, although it covers less than a third of the globe. We have a relatively good understanding of human and natural changes to land surface radiation, albedo, and momentum budgets, hydrologic routing, and carbon, water, and nutrient cycle, but do we have a good enough understanding to harness those for mitigation and adaptation to climate change via direct intervention on land-atmosphere interactions? Desai will discuss this and some of the observational and modeling advances and limitations as we move forward towards building resilient communities.

How can particulate matter in the air exert an influence on water resources in the Rocky Mountains? This presentation will review the physical, chemical and optical properties of aerosols that result in impacts on surface radiation and precipitation formation, and will present recent findings from our group on the factors influencing the annual cycle of aerosols in SAIL. A particular focus is on ice nucleating particles (INPs), the subset of atmospheric particles that are capable of nucleating ice at conditions that would not typically support the transition from liquid to solid.

Rick Flagan is the McCollum/Corcoran Professor of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Science and Engineering. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He completed his SM and PhD from MIT, also in Mechanical Engineering, with a thesis on the formation of gaseous pollutants in combustion. Upon joining the Caltech faculty, he shifted his focus to aerosols. He is a leader in the broad field of aerosol science whose research focuses on atmospheric aerosols and their impacts on climate, air quality, and human health, and on the development of methods for measurement of aerosol particles from many micrometers to 1 nm in size. He has invented numerous instruments and experimental methods for measuring fine airborne particles, including one, the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS), that has become the primary instrument worldwide for the measurement aerosol particles smaller than 1 µm.
The Greenland Ice Sheet has become the largest single source of barystatic sea-level rise in the cryosphere. Numerical models are the best tools to make projections of the future of the ice sheet. However, predicting how fast the ice sheet flows, and when does calving occur at glacier margins has proven to be challenging, primarily because of (1) the limited knowledge of the fate of meltwater in the hydrologic system and (2) the poor representation of ice-ocean interactions.
In his honor, the Don L. Boyer Memorial Endowment for Excellence in Environmental Fluid Dynamics has been created to support groundbreaking, crucial lectures in the important fields of environmental prediction, risks, and sustainability. These lectures, emphasizing the fundamental dynamics of environmental flows in the spirit of the research of Don L. Boyer, will enliven the conversation around these topics in the college and beyond. This lecture will be supported annually in perpetuity by the fund.
