Gold Mass Edison Series Lecture: The Catholic Faith and Modern Science

The Catholic Faith and Modern Science: Understanding and Correcting Models of Conflict

Christopher Baglow, Ph.D.

Recent studies show that many young Catholics assume that science and religion are inherently incompatible, but in the words of chemist and eminent historian of science, Lawrence Principe, “The idea that scientific and religious camps have historically been separate and antagonistic is rejected by all modern historians of science.” Baglow, the director of the Science and Religion Initiative of the McGrath Institute for Church Life at Notre Dame, will address the origins of the conflict/warfare model of science and religion. He’ll also share the actual approach of the church to science, and outline the path toward future thought.…

"The Constitutional Mitigation of Climate Change" by Carlos Libardo Bernal-Pulido

Law School Staff Carlos Bernal
Abstract

Mitigating climate change is a global goal that a number of countries have signed on to through climate change agreements such as the 2015 Paris Agreement. In addition, several countries – particularly in the Global South – have recently adopted constitutions that commit them to climate change mitigation.        …

Firefighters and PFAS: Occupational Health and Environmental Health

Prof. Graham Peaslee

1920x1080 Our April14 Res

Online StreamingTuesday April 14th 2020 - 7:00 pm ET

A group of chemicals, Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS), was virtually unheard of by most of the public until 2012, when a study about their persistence in the environment was published. These chemicals are widely used, particularly in firefighting foams and gear, as well as in other consumer products. Prof. Graham Peaslee has examined PFAS use in a variety of these products. Learn the results of his recent research to find out what contact with this substance means for firefighters, and for you.…

"Probabilistic simulations and predictions of hydrological processes over North America," by Martyn Clark

Clark Martyn Fellow
Abstract

As part of the Global Water Futures project, there is an initiative underway to improve probabilistic simulations and predictions of hydrological processes across North America. This presentation will summarize recent progress in this effort, focusing on recent work to: (1) develop a new probabilistic meteorological forcing dataset for North America; (2) develop model-agnostic workflows to configure hydrological and land models across large geographical domains; (3) develop a comprehensive model benchmarking system, including synthetic test cases to check the equations are implemented properly, process-based model evaluation to evaluate the fidelity of model simulations and identify model weaknesses, and benchmarks to quantify the information content in data and models; (4) improve the numerical implementation of land models; (5) improve continental-domain network routing models, including parallelization of hierarchical river networks, incorporation of lakes and reservoirs, and developing capabilities for multi-scale simulation; (6) advance capabilities for parameter estimation and data assimilation; and (7) understand the predictability of streamflow, including the elasticity of predictability, to understand the benefits that will arise from improving specific components of probabilistic streamflow forecasting systems, in order to guide science investments. This model development work is targeted toward water security assessments, applications in streamflow forecasting, and improving the representation of hydrological processes in Earth System models.…
