Title: Weather, Conflict and Crime in India

Eci Seminar Iyer

Abstract: We examine the role of weather variations in driving inter-religious conflict and crime in India. Below-normal rainfall levels result in significantly higher incidence of violent crimes and property crimes, though the impact on inter-religious conflict is not statistically significant. We attribute these results primarily to the relationship between rainfall shocks and poverty, and show that trade shocks that increase poverty have a similar impact on crime.
