Mariah Nascimento
Dr. Mariah Nascimento holds a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science (2017), a specialization in Molecular Biology and Genetics (2020), a Master's degree in Health Sciences (2021), and a Ph.D. in Microbiology (2025), with a focus on environmental microbiology. All degrees were obtained in Brazil, however, part of her doctoral research was conducted at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia.
Her Ph.D. research focused on the detection of biological pollution, including viruses and human fecal molecular markers, in both wastewater and environmental water sources. She also worked on the development and implementation of novel assays using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology for the detection of these contaminants.
Dr. Nascimento joined the University of Notre Dame in April 2025, where she collaborates with Professor Kyle Bibby on a project investigating the microbiological quality of drinking water in urban slums in Africa. She is also involved in other related research initiatives within the team.
