The Morrison Family Education and Outreach Pavilion at ND-LEEF was recognized with an Acanthus Award from the Chicago-Midwest Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America last month.

Acanthus awards promote excellence in Classical and Vernacular design and recognize achievement in Architecture, Interior Design, Preservation & Restoration, Landscape Design, the Allied Arts & Craftsmanship, Unbuilt Work and Student Work. The pavilion won in the category of Architecture.

The three-member CIAA Jury commented on the pavilion: “Beautifully detailed small pavilion – handling of the materials was beautiful. Seem to fit well on the site. It appears that it did well to serve its program.  It is aging quite well – shots in Spring, Fall, Winter.  Seems sufficiently rugged.  Nice contrast to some of the opulence of the other projects.  Very spare, but very sweet, understated and beautifully detailed and beautifully proportioned.”

The award ceremony was held at the beautifully constructed, Elks National Memorial in Chicago on November 14, 2015. Pavilion Architect, Aimee Buccellato and ND-LEEF Director, Jennifer Tank attended the event.

“It was a joy to see Professor Buccellato receive the ICAA Award in Architecture for the Morrison Family Pavilion at ND-LEEF,” said Jennifer Tank. “Throughout the evening, I felt the tremendous respect that her colleagues, peers, and mentors have for Aimee’s talent and creativity. The ND-ECI is proud of her commitment to designing and building sustainable yet beautiful structures, captured in this ongoing collaboration.”

The Morrison Pavilion, the inaugural building at the University of Notre Dame’s Linked Experimental Ecosystem Facility, has received additional honors, including “high commendation” for Excellence in Design in Community Engagement from the International Network of Traditional Architecture and Urbanism and a 2015 Citation Award from the Indiana American Institute of Architects.
