Professor Simon Richter will deliver a guest lecture on campus on the topic of cultural responses to sea level rise and catastrophic flooding. Richter is Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pennsylvania, a member of their Graduate Groups in Comparative Literature and Religious Studies, and affiliated with their Programs in Cinema Studies, Environmental Humanities, and Women’s Studies. 

Richter is a member of the Mellon-funded Humanities + Urbanism + Design Initiative at Penn. Every summer, he directs the Penn in Berlin & Rotterdam Program in conjunction with a course on Comparative Cultures of Sustainability. Simon is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities. He is currently working on a book on Goethe’s Wetlands: Soggy Texts and Permeable Selves and leading a research project on Languages of Sustainability.
